• The original settlers of Worthington were attracted by Lake Okabena and the prospect of bountiful harvests reaped from the fertile prairies.
• In the Dakota language, Okabena means “nesting place of herons.”
• The area began to thrive in 1871 when the Sioux City and St. Paul railroads came to town.
